Isn't a boggart a creature that takes the form it thinks will scare it's target the most, after scanning the mind of the person to discover their biggest fears. To defeat them you laugh, usually with the help of the ridickulus charm which forces the boggart to change it's form in some way which makes it funny.

My EX-Stepfather pointing a sword at my throat and shouting. Um... I'd make it more funny by Turning it into a marshmallow sword and forcing him into a robin hood outfit from the animated film. or something like that.
